Fifth member of the band

I have to get used to the idea that it's my blog, it's free, and no one can complain if I pop in to jot down short thoughts as they pop into my head. Here's one such short thought:

What am I about that's different? I think I'm about bringing the computer into the band -- not as an additional instrument -- but as a fifth member of the band.

And yes, this can cause friction with some of the other members of the band. Which probably explains in hindsight why they've all been absent from the rehearsals and gigs for over fifteen years now....

(Literal translation: the generative process, which apparently threatens some artists, has been part of my act for much longer than my recent exploration of proper coding. Also, in a literal sense, it's me that hasn't been on the stage lately -- but we all have to define for ourselves where the "stage" -- like the frame -- really begins and ends.)

Well, if you're going to post your thoughts for a stream of consciousness sort of blog, I applaud you. There are going to be times when I don't understand, but I'll be reading it nonetheless.

Keep it up!

So does this mean you're going to let seemingly random math determine the course of your art? Or at least influence it? Ballsy. Reminds me of Fractals.

No, I'm not going to let it determine the course. I'm interested in the generative art thing, but not a bona fide gen artist because I still make the final call on everything. If I run a random routine and don't like what it puts out, I either change it or junk it.

Mostly I like its potential for filling space with something unusual and unexpected. But any random thing can also be a starting point for me to develop something from. I remember a kind of game I once played with my father when I was maybe 8 or 9, he would draw some arbitrary shapes on a sheet of paper and I would make them into something.
